Korean 2-Point Mahjong Ⅺ
– Standard Rules and Scoring for Beginners
Chapter 11. Score Calculation Exercises
Let’s calculate some winning hands together. Failure to accurately calculate the score often leads to fatal violations especially when declaring the “Win!” or “uper!”. A violation is also called a “jump” in Korean mahjong.
➊ East Wind declared the “win by discard” (8 of pins) from West Wind on concealed hand, having already declared an “uper”.

East Wind cannot win with this hand because the basic score is just 1 point (concealed hand). In fact, because “uper” (bonus 1 point) doesn’t have any basic score and this hand cannot make basic 2 points, the moment East Wind declared “uper”, East Wind have already committed a violation (jump).
In this case, East Wind enters in “sacred discard” and East Wind cannot win the game. See <Chapter 9.2 Sacred Discard> The game restarts on North Wind after cancelling East Wind’s win declaration.
❷ East Wind won by self-draw (8 of pins) on concealed hand after declairng “uper”.

This winning hand looks like “all sequences” but does not. Because it is not a “win by discard”. This winning hand is “all simples”.
The “uper” declaration is also valid because even if you “win by discard”, you can earn at least basic 2 points with “all simples”. If you win by discard with “8 of pins” from another player, the winning hand will be “all sequences”. Therefore “uper” declaration of “all sequence” is valid if not “all simples”.
